FAFSA is an acronym for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is used to apply for financial aid for college from the federal government, state government and most colleges and universities.

The FAFSA’s web site is fafsa.ed.gov. The web address fafsa.gov also works.

FAFSA does not refer to the financial aid awarded using the application form, though some students use the term informally to refer to the financial aid.

After the student submits the FAFSA, they will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) containing the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
